Dry Needling

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique that uses thin, sterile monofilament needles to target trigger points and areas of muscular dysfunction. It is an evidence-based treatment aimed at reducing pain, releasing muscle tension, and restoring normal movement patterns.

How It Differs from Acupuncture

While dry needling and acupuncture both use similar needles, they are distinct practices. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy pathways throughout the body. Dry needling is grounded in Western anatomy and neuroscience, targeting specific muscles and trigger points to address musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction directly.

What to Expect

A needle is inserted directly into a trigger point or tight muscle band. You may feel a brief twitch response — a quick, involuntary contraction of the muscle — which is a positive sign that the tissue is responding to treatment. Sessions are typically short, and many patients notice reduced pain and improved mobility within one to two visits. Some mild soreness following treatment is normal and usually resolves within 24–48 hours.

Who Benefits

Dry needling is effective for patients dealing with chronic muscle tightness, myofascial pain, sports injuries, tension headaches, neck and back pain, and conditions that have not fully responded to other manual therapies. It is often used in combination with spinal manipulation and soft tissue techniques for a comprehensive treatment approach.
